A Laura Kesler Photography "Fresh 48" session is a short (usually less than an hour) session, performed at the birth location within 48 hours birth These sessions are more casual and candid in nature than typical newborn photo sessions. They include a mixture of candid interactive moments between you and your little one and a few gentle, guided posed portraits. Your new baby will be photographed by himself or herself (first professional portrait!) and with you (and your partner, if he or she is present).
Please note that this is not a birth session, which documents the actual birth process. Nor is it a traditional family session, which sometimes includes different family groupings. It is designed to be a quiet, peaceful, relaxed session that documents your newest little family member in the first hours/days of life, and to capture small environmental details that may help document the story of his or her arrival.
I arrive, check in at the nurse's station, come to your room, introduce myself, get my camera settings dialed in, and get to work.
Before pulling out my camera, I try to make sure that any meal items, drinks, trash, bags, etc. that may be out in the room are placed out of sight (if possible) and assess the light.
I try to avoid using flash and prefer to use natural light for these sessions. However, if it is too dark to do so, I will use bounced light from an on-camera flash. I then begin the photography portion of the session, which I try to keep to about 30 minutes and in any case, no more than 45.
I typically will not swaddle or handle your new little one. Instead, I will document you and/or your partner as you swaddle, snuggle, and interact with your new baby. I will also capture your baby in his or her bassinet.
In the last few minutes of the session, I will let you know that I am about to wrap things up and ask if there is anything else you would like for me to capture in photos.
Once the session is complete, I will pack up my gear and head out to back up your images and start culling and editing them.
For a hospital birth, the session will take place in your hospital room. For home births, the session will be performed in your home.
Fresh 48 sessions are, by nature, performed within 48 hours of birth.
If you would prefer a newborn session that takes place outside of that period of time, I would be happy to refer you to another local newborn photographer who performed traditional newborn sessions!
The digital birth announcement will be emailed to you within 24 hours of your session.
Your remaining photos will be culled, edited, and delivered to you within two weeks of your session. They will be delivered via a private, password-protected online gallery. Your gallery link, along with log-in instructions, will be emailed to you on the day of delivery.
You are free to share your gallery with others or keep it private.
Anyone you share your gallery with will be able to view and download your images and order prints and products from within your gallery.
Your gallery will be active and available to you for 30 days from the day it is delivered to you. During that time, you can log in and view/download your images as many times as you want.
Photos are provided as full-resolution non-watermarked digital JPEG files. While you can download them one at a time, you can also download your entire gallery at once in the form of several zip files.
Please note that because you will be receiving full-resolution files, you will need a device that can hold at least several gigabytes of data for downloading and storing the photos.
While I strive to create as many meaningful photos as possible, I do not guarantee that any certain number will be created or delivered. Most clients receive approximately 30 or more Fresh 48 photos, but no particular quantity is promised.
Most definitely! I typically taking LOTS of photos during Fresh 48 sessions - many more than will be delivered. This is in large part because some of them will capture closed eyes, unexpected movements or motion blur, unexpected changes in lighting, an unflattering angle or pose, duplicate poses/scenes, and things of that nature. These types of images are commonly referred to as "outtakes," and are not included in client galleries or delivered images..
All other photos are delivered.
Yes! Professionally-created albums, photo books, and prints are available on an a la carte basis.
Laura Kesler Photography does not sell its copyright. However, you will receive a complimentary print-and-share release that permits you to share your images with others and print them at commercial print labs of your choice.
I strive to deliver only beautifully finished photos. I therefore provide only finished JPEG files and printed products.
RAW files that come straight out of camera are similar in some ways to film negatives that come of out film cameras and that still require developing. I process (or "develop") the RAW files that I create, ensuring that they are properly calibrated for my cameras and lenses, processed for beautiful exposure and color, and been individually assessed for possible noise reduction, straightening, cropping, and other post-processing techniques that lend the final prints and images a polished and finished appearance. Once this has been done, I export the photos as full-resolution JPEG files in order to fully merge the post-processing effects into the final images and prepare them for delivery.
Just as most authors don't sell their initial book drafts, and many other professionals don't submit their initial project work to clients as a final product, I do not, under any circumstances, provide RAW files as part of Laura Kesler Photography's services, collections, or delivered products.
